Cle-Blam-O jamming in blue for Windsor

An early power jam saw Windsor take the lead, but this didn’t last long and a flurry of blocker penalties before the half time saw Windsor fielding just 2 blockers in consecutive jams. Half time, the scores: Windsor 32 – London 121.

Sophie Culverhouse (blue)

The second half and Windsor walls gave it their all against powerful jammers Fox Sake, Lola Vulkano and Red ‘n’ Roll and strong, persistent offence from Goregasm and Lady Go-Go. Meanwhile the 5-strong Windsor jammer rotation picked up more lead jammer status and as a result more points. The final score: a prediction beating: Windsor 161 – London 221.
We’re all hurting today but are extremely grateful to the Brawl Saints and can’t wait to do it again.

The Royal Windsor Rollergirls are pleased to introduce the Curfew Skate Crew, a junior roller derby league aimed at girls aged 11 to 17. Named after the famous Curfew tower at Windsor Castle, the junior league will be coached by 5 Windsor ’A’ team coaches.

Sessions will be held on Saturday mornings at Charters Leisure Centre in Ascot, we’ll teach basic skating skills before progressing to more advanced roller derby techniques.

Saftey will be key and all participants will not only need their own quad roller skates, but will need to wear knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, a helmet and a mouth-guard. We’ll be holding an initial introductory session where parents/guardians can meet the coaches, find out more about roller derby and the Curfew Skate Crew and get equipment advice.

What is Roller Derby?

Roller derby is a contact sport played by two teams of five members roller skating in the same direction around a track. Game play consists of a series of short jams in which both teams designate a scoring player (the “jammer”) who scores points by passing members of the opposing team. Both teams attempt to assist their own jammer whilst stopping the opposing jammer, playing both offense and defense simultaneously.

Modern roller derby is an international sport dominated by all-female amateur teams with a growing number of male, co-ed, and junior roller derby teams.

How do I join?

If you think roller derby is the sport for you or you have any questions, please get in touch: curfewskatecrew@windsorrollergirls.com. In the meantime please ‘like’ our facebook page ‘Curfew Skate Crew – Junior Roller Derby’ and follow us on twitter @CurfewSkateCrew and we’ll keep you updated.

Saturday 13th April, Windsor’s last public bout before ’Who Dares Windsor’ head off to Belgium, and this time it was the ‘B-Headers’ entertaining the crowds at Windsor Leisure Centre. Just 3 weeks since the B-Headers played the Sheffield Steel Rollergirls earning themselves a leap in the European rankings from 122 to 92, this game was expected to be close with a prediction of 151:150 in favour of Bristol (Derby Data Europe)

Riley Cyrus jamming for the B-Headers in blue

Windsor were first to put a point on the board and what followed was a close first period, with Windsor just holding on to the lead. Strong walls from Little Don, PipLash, Tash of the Titans and Bartlett meant they were able to hold the Bristol jammer in the pack, allowing lead jammer Cle-Blam-O to open up the score to 83:39. Just before the half time whistle a full penalty box for Bristol allowed Cle-Blam-O to extend the lead still further and at half time the scores, 117:57 to Windsor.

Cle-Blam-O in blue jamming for the B-Headers

Bristol kept the pressure on throughout the second period, with heavy offence and some big hits. A power jam to Windsor allowed Riley Cyrus to add another 21 points to the Windsor score, next a power jam to Bristol and with just 2 minutes left on the clock 198:126.

The full time score Windsor B-Headers 204, Bristol Bees 131.

This game sees the B-Headers jump 6 places to 86.

Player awards for Windsor went to:

Best Blocker – StompEm

Best Jammer – Riley Cyrus

MVP – Cle-Blam-O

Usual Windsor intra-league rules applied and a strict rotating bench ensured all players got equal track time.

The fans were treated to thrilling jammer battles, big hits, tactical play and breath-taking leaps and agility. At half time the Hurricanes were leading 149-31. The second period saw a penalty-heavy Hurricanes side reduced to just 1 and 2 players on track and a series of power jams to the Merry Wives enabled them to close the gap, the final score 253-124 to the Hawker Hurricanes.

Tell us about your skate name.

I chose my skate name because I like greek mythology and its a play on words; Clash of the Titans/Tash of the Titans and I like the newer version of that film

How and when did you get into roller derby?

I started Roller Derby a year ago on Feb 18th 2012 after I moved up here from Salisbury. I had been to some LRR intraleagues before that and really enjoyed the experience so decided the best way to make friends in a new place was to join Windsor! I only agreed to move to Reading so I could join RWRG. FACT!

What are your roller derby highlights so far?

I’ve only played intraleagues so far but my highlight was playing in the first one as a HH (and winning I think?) and going to Paris to watch all of RWRG kill it! I don’t think I’ve ever shouted that much in my life and I had a bruised palm from cheering and clapping so much. Being in the TT is great too.

What are you looking forward to in the world of roller derby?

I’m looking forward to going to Gent in May (whether it’s to support or play) and finally geting some skates that I won’t have to tape my feet into to keep on.

Is there another derby player you really admire and why?

I really admire Lane (Windsor A Team Captain) as she has a good derby brain, powerful hits and good strategies. She also does awesome jumps.

What’s your derby super power?

I think I hit quite hard. I hit Sian (Windsor’s Rambo Blackshanks) out of the door on Sunday which I feel bad about!

Do you have any advice for a rookie skater?

My advice for a rookie skater is to keep getting up when you get hit and carry on! Come to a lot of practises and get stuck in with events as an NSO as you learn a lot.

Who’s your biggest fan?

My biggest fan is Little Don because I bribed her (she’s always nice to me whether I deserve it or not). Also Heaf (Amy Heath) but she won’t admit it.

Tash (in red) jamming for Windsor Intra-League team the Merry Wives

Quick questions…

Favourite song? I don’t have a favourite song because I always change my mind but I love No Doubt, Placebo and Billy Talent.

Favourite film? Muppets Christmas Carol and I know it word for word… :/

Favourite food? Pub burgers and chips. OR CURRY!!!!! Or cadbury’s fudge.

Favourite drink? Chocolate Yazoo and I have one after scrimmage every sunday

Favourite holiday destination? Kingsbridge in Devon because I love paddle boarding and crabbing and also pasties!

Favourite TV show? Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Favourite twitter account? I don’t have twitter so I guess the RWRG twitter account @WindsorRG

Rachel Shore jamming for Windsor (in blue)

Sheffield were first to put scores on the board with a 4:0 jam, but an early power jam saw Windsor take the lead, 40:20. A few lead changes followed with a strong power jam from Windsor’s Shore taking the score to 61:38 to Windsor, but a power jam to Sheffield saw the teams draw level at 66-66. At half time the scores were Sheffield 107, B-Headers 69.

Sheffield were able to hold onto their lead and a series of power jams coupled with strong offence and tactical calling in the second period enabled the experienced Sheffield side to extend their lead still further, final score: Sheffield 248, B-Headers 125.
